Age verification
An age gate shown before the store opens, with a proceed button and a cancel button that sends visitors elsewhere.
At a glance: Not added by default. In the Overlay area of the left sidebar, click Add section and choose Age verification. Once added, it shows on every page.
Good for
- Stores selling alcohol, tobacco, vapes or other age-restricted products
- Content meant only for adults
Section settings
General
| Show again after | Number of days before showing the age verification again.
Adjustable from 0day to 100day (default 30day). |
| Content alignment | Aligns the text content within its column.
Default: Left. |
Content
| Caption | Small label above the heading, used for eyebrow text like a category or a date. |
| Heading | The section title. Leave it empty to hide the heading row entirely and let the content start at the top. |
| Heading size | Picks one of the heading sizes defined in Theme settings → Typography, so headings stay consistent across sections instead of being sized one by one.
Choose Default (default), H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 or H6. |
| Description | Body copy shown under the heading. Supports bold, italic and links. |
Proceed button
| Button label | The text on the button that confirms the visitor's age and lets them into the store, for example Yes, I'm over 21. Don't leave it empty, or visitors have no way in. |
| Button style | Which of your button styles from Theme settings → Buttons the Proceed button uses. It's usually the strongest one.
Choose Primary (default), Secondary or Tertiary. |
Cancel button
| Button label | The text on the button for visitors who are under age, for example No, take me back. Leave it empty to show only the Proceed button. |
| Redirect link | Where the Cancel button sends the visitor. Leave empty to return to the previous page. |
| Button style | Which of your button styles from Theme settings → Buttons the Cancel button uses. A quieter style than Proceed usually works best.
Choose Primary, Secondary (default) or Tertiary. |
Message
| Message | Small print under the buttons, such as a legal note or a link to your terms. |
Image
| Show image | Shows the image for this item.
Displays an image alongside the content. Off by default. |
| Desktop image | Background image used on desktop.
2880 x 1280px (large) .jpg recommended. Only appears when Show image is on. |
| Show image on mobile | Turn off to hide the image on mobile screens.
On by default. Only appears when Show image is on. |
| Mobile image | A separate image used on mobile. Leave empty to reuse the desktop image.
1200 x 900px .jpg recommended. Only appears when Show image is on and Show image on mobile is on. |
| Image position | Which side of the text the image sits on.
Choose Left or Right (default). Only appears when Show image is on. |
Tips
- Say the age in the button. Yes, I'm over 21 is clearer than Enter, and it's a statement the visitor has to agree to.
- Send under-age visitors somewhere useful. Set a Redirect link, for example to a responsible-drinking site, rather than leaving them stuck.
- An age gate isn't age checking. It asks the question but can't prove the answer. Check which rules apply where you sell.
Troubleshooting
What happens when a visitor clicks Cancel?
With a Redirect link, they go to that address. Without one, they go back to the page they came from. If there's no previous page, for example because they typed your address, the gate shows a short message with a way to return to the question.
How do I see the gate again after confirming?
Confirming is remembered in your browser for the number of days set in Show again after. To test again, open a private window or clear your browser's cookies for your store (the cookie is called age-verified). In the theme editor, click the section in the sidebar to preview it at any time.
Visitors can't get past the gate
Check that the Proceed button's Button label isn't empty. Without a label, the button isn't shown, and the gate has no close button, so visitors can't get in.
