404 page

What shoppers see at a URL that doesn't exist. Worth setting up properly, so shoppers get a way onward rather than a dead end.

Where to find it: In the theme editor, choose this template from the page dropdown at the top of the screen. Template file: templates/404.json.

Good for

  • Turning a broken link into a way back into the store
  • Matching the error page to your brand with a watermark

Section settings

Content

Caption Small label above the heading, used for eyebrow text like a category or a date.
Heading The section title. Leave it empty to hide the heading row entirely and let the content start at the top.
Heading size Picks one of the heading sizes defined in Theme settings → Typography, so headings stay consistent across sections instead of being sized one by one.

Choose Default (default), H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 or H6.
Description Body copy shown under the heading. Supports bold, italic and links.

Layout

404 display Text shows a large "404" above your message. Watermark shows an oversized "404" behind the message, filled with the Watermark gradient. Hidden shows only your text.

Choose Text (default), Watermark or Hidden.
Watermark gradient The color gradient that fills the watermark digits. A gradient that fades out toward the top keeps the heading readable.

Default: linear-gradient(180deg, rgba(10, 66, 255, 0.08) 0%, rgba(10, 66, 255, 0.7) 100%). Only appears when 404 display is Watermark.
404 size How large the "404" is drawn, in either the Text or Watermark style.

Adjustable from 40% to 100% (default 70%). Only appears when 404 display is not Hidden.

Appearance

Color scheme Sets the background, text, border and button colors for the section. Schemes are defined once in Theme settings → Colors and reused everywhere, so changing a scheme updates every section using it.

Spacing

Top and bottom spacing for desktop, with optional separate values for mobile. These are the same controls on every section. See Settings every section shares.

Tips

  • Add a button to your best-selling collection in the description, so the page leads somewhere.
  • Fix the cause too. Set up URL redirects (Online Store → Navigation → URL redirects) for products or pages you've deleted or renamed.
  • Try Watermark with a soft gradient for a large branded number that doesn't compete with your message.
